Ok, so like most K-dwellers, K-friends and K-watchers, I’ve seen the .gif going round showing this year’s Miss Korea contestants. I hadn’t seen this youtube video though until this evening.
I’ve given up trying to figure it out to be honest. Is it South Korea’s Ultra-Neo-Confucianist collectivist leanings? Did everybody accidentally-on-purpuse go to the same Apgujeong plastic surgeon and ask for the No.1 eyes, nose and sundries? Is it simply that they all chose the same makeup artist (or didn’t)? And who are these girls anyway?
Chatting about this over a street-beer this afternoon, more than a few people agreed that this nice (and quite possibly only) Spring Sunday brought at least several dozen identical, potential Miss Korea pageant winners (if these were not indeed the pageant contesters – it seems impossible to tell…) stolling up and down the Haebangchon strip for some reason. Aside from the nice weather, nothing out of the ordinary was happening in HBC today so I can only conclude several thousand more were strolling the entire nation.
I really have no idea what to think about this.
Actually, after pondering it for 20 minutes, I realise I could go on and on about what I think of this. I still don’t understand it though.
